South Korea, Cambodia Boost Efforts Against Online Scams

(MENAFN) Cambodian authorities have arrested 10 additional South Korean citizens as part of an ongoing effort to combat online fraud, South Korea's Foreign Minister Cho Hyun announced on Monday.

This comes after South Korea repatriated 64 of its nationals who had been detained in Cambodia for their suspected roles in online scam operations, an action taken on Saturday.

During a press conference, Cho explained that the arrests occurred on Thursday, when Cambodian law enforcement took into custody approximately 10 South Korean nationals connected to these criminal activities.

Additionally, two South Koreans, believed to be victims of the scams, were rescued on the same day.

These individuals are expected to return to South Korea later this week, according to reports from a news agency.

The South Korean Foreign Ministry has since launched an extensive investigation into its citizens linked to online scams worldwide.

Cho revealed that the ministry plans to recruit 40 more consular officials to manage these cases more effectively.

Cho emphasized the importance of close collaboration with Cambodia to address this issue, stating: "We believe we can respond effectively through close consultations with the Cambodian government."

The situation has raised public alarm, especially after the tragic death of a South Korean college student in August.

The student was reportedly tortured and killed by a criminal syndicate involved in online scams operating in Cambodia.

In response to the rising concerns, South Korea has intensified its diplomatic initiatives and investigations, including missions to locate and rescue its citizens from these criminal networks.
