New Thailand, Cambodia Border Clashes Erupt

(MENAFN) Both Thailand and Cambodia reported new confrontations on Wednesday, coinciding with plans for military negotiations between the two nations.

Cambodia’s Defense Ministry stated that Thai forces launched two shells into the Poipet region, later firing another into Banteay Meanchey province, which injured two civilians, according to a media outlet.

These developments come as the two armies are set to hold their first discussions since hostilities reignited on Dec. 7.

Thai troops also fired near the Preah Vihear Temple and Ghost Mountain, while Cambodian forces responded with BM-21 rocket fire.

On Tuesday, Thailand announced that its soldiers demolished two structures in the Cambodian border town of Poipet, claiming they were used to shelter scammers and store weapons, according to a public broadcaster.

Thai forces further reported that fighting persisted across three locations along the Sa Kaeo frontier on Wednesday, according to a news outlet.

Separately, the Royal Thai Army declared on its official account on the US social media platform Facebook that a Cambodian report accusing Thailand of environmental crimes was a "serious distortion of facts.”

A meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) was scheduled for Wednesday to address the ongoing tensions.

Thai officials confirmed that 23 Thai soldiers and one civilian have been killed in the clashes, while another 33 civilians lost their lives as “collateral effects of the situation.”
